HOLY SPIRIT PARISH, AMBASSA

Brief History: In view of starting a Parish, the land in Ambassa was bought in 1990 by Fr. Lourthusamy, C.S.C., the then Parish Priest of Kathalcherra. In response to the invitation of late Bishop Denzil, Bishop of Silchar, S.V.D. Frs. Valentine and John Paul came to Tripura in 1990. In 1993 S.V.D. Frs. Cyprian and Peter were appointed as Assistants to Kathalcherra Parish, but stayed in Mr. Sona Bahadur Bongcher’s house in Ambassa, and looked after the pastoral needs of the Catholics in the area. On 8th December 1993 the Sub Divisions of Kamalpur and Gandacherra were given to the care of S.V.D. Fathers. On 16th February 1994, Holy Spirit Parish was created as a Quasi Parish with Fr. Peter D’Cunha, S.V.D., as the first Parish Priest. In 1995 the construction of the Parish Church began and it was blessed and inaugurated on the 30th January 1996, raising it to the status of a Parish. Presently the Parish is spread in Ambassa Sub-Division with tribes from Halam, Reang, Garo, Hrangkhawl, Molsom, Koloi, Kuki and Debbarma in 17 villages.

In July 1995 the Holy Spirit Sisters (S.Sp.S.) arrived in the Parish, in the then Diocese of Silchar. In 1996, a School was opened along with a Hostel for 23 K.G. children. The Sisters assisted the Fathers to take care of the School and the Hostel as well as treating patients in the makeshift dispensary. On 2 May 1998, the Convent for the Sisters was inaugurated and in November 2002 the Girls Hostel was inaugurated. The School was upgraded to Class XII, a Higher Secondary School, in the year 2014, under TBSE Board.
