ST. ALPHONSA PARISH, KHUMULWNG

Khumulwng Parish was bifurcated from Shanti Rani Parish, Mariamnagar, and was erected as a separate Parish by Bishop Lumen Monteiro, C.S.C., on 1st November 2008 with St. Alphonsa as its Patroness. The motto of the Parish is "Inspired by the word to influence the world". Fr. Jomon Thattamattathil S.V.D., the Rector of Jeevadhara Minor Seminary, was appointed as its first Parish Priest. This Parish has 13 Substations. The Institutions located in the Parish are: Pastoral Centre, Diocesan Minor Seminary, Montfort School, and St. Mary’s Convent.

Brief History: Bishop Denzil D’Souza of Silchar started the Catechists Training Centre in the year 1988 at Kumarghat. Fr. Thomas Thengumpally, C.S.C., served as the first Director of Pastoral Centre. The candidates for Catechists were trained for two years and were then sent to different Parishes for evangelization. Later, it was moved to Champaknagar and a new building was built, which would be the Diocesan Pastoral Centre. On 12th February 1995, the new Pastoral Centre was blessed and inaugurated by Bishop Denzil D’Souza. Rev Fr. Thomas continued to serve as its Director.
Brief
History: Knowing the importance of Diocesan
Clergy one of the first things that the ‘new’ Bishop Lumen did was to establish
a Minor Seminary for candidates to the priesthood. He had a lot of difficulties
in doing this as he had no Priests of his own and had to request and plead with
the religious congregations. Finally, the S.V.D. Fathers accepted to run the
Minor Seminary and it was formally established in the year 2000, where it
continues to be operating and the students are enrolled in the Montfort School.
Since 2019, because of the new rule from the School authorities, only students
who have completed their class X are admitted to the School and in the Minor
Seminary.
Brief
History: The Montfort Brothers took over this
School in Moharpara from Holy Cross Fathers in 1990. It was later shifted to Champaknagar on 21stJune
1993 and renamed as Montfort School, Champaknagar.
